FAQ
Answers to common questions
How is Ginkgo different from Dropbox or Google Drive?
Cloud drives sync — delete locally and it's gone everywhere. Ginkgo is backup — it keeps every version. Delete by accident? Restore it. Ransomware? Roll back to yesterday.
Do I have to pay for cloud storage?
No. BYOS — Bring Your Own Storage. Use your existing drives, NAS, or WebDAV/S3 cloud. No capacity limits, no monthly fees.
Will backup slow down my computer?
No. Only changed files are processed, running at low priority. Most users don't notice it.
Can other people see my data?
No. AES-256-GCM encrypted before leaving your machine. Keys stored locally. Zero-knowledge architecture — we can't read your data.
What is the 3-2-1 backup rule?
3 copies, 2 media types, 1 off-site. Ginkgo automates this — one source writes to multiple targets.
Which cloud providers are supported?
Any S3-compatible service (AWS, Cloudflare R2, MinIO, Wasabi, Backblaze B2), WebDAV (Synology, Nextcloud, QNAP), and SFTP. All encrypted in transit and at rest.
Can I restore a single file?
Yes. Restore one file, a folder, or an entire snapshot. Preview contents and diffs before restoring.
Does Ginkgo collect telemetry?
No. Zero telemetry, zero tracking, no third-party scripts. Bug reports stay local.
What is headless mode?
Run Ginkgo on a server or NAS without a GUI. Manage via HTTP API or CLI.
How does Ginkgo protect against ransomware?
WebDAV cloud backups are isolated from your machine. Ransomware can't reach them. Even if your system is compromised, off-site backups remain intact.
